Volunteers Testimonials

As a volunteer to ZOP I got to meet wonderful people through diferent programs. I had an opportunity to visit villages that I would never know they exist. Taking part in these programs taught me that when you give back and help the community, you bene›t more as we are obliged to help the needy. It’s a very rewarding experience. Participated in Designing ZOP Website, Mobile Clinics, Community Water Supply Projects and Elderly Outreach Camps

When I arrived at Mnazi Mmoja for my 1rst meeting with Dr.Naufal I didn’t know what kind of assignment he had in mind for me during my time as ZOP - volunteer. But he was clear about what he wanted me to do and introduced me to several other ZOP volunteers. They were very kind and helpfull. During my time on Zanzibar I got the chance to be part of a ZOP Mobile Clinic Camp in Fujoni. This day showed me that the work ZOP does is very important and that we should be thankfull that there are volunteers who work so hard to help people in need.

The ZOP makes mobile clinic to Tumbatu a few times during the year and brings with them a team of doctors that includes physicians, dentists, ophthalmologists and gynecologists. I saw a never-ending line under the burning sun, and doctors paying qualitative attention to each patient. All of them were doing this absolutely for free such as providing check-ups and medicines. They not just paid attention, they spread kindness from deep within their heart.

When I think about my volunteering time in Zanzibar 3 words come up in my mind: collaboration, generosity, and peace. On contrary, to what I imagined Zanzibar Outreach Program taught me more than I expected. It reminded me of home but also made me discover a whole new culture: different and very similar at the same time. It showed me how full your heart can be through simple things: the children’s smiles and curiosity in their eyes when they saw me. This purity and genuineness of the Zanzibarians, even the ones my age and older, marked my heart with life-lasting lessons on my humanity. The little I did for them is nothing in comparison to what they did for me. When I arrived there, I taught: “I know so much of course I will help”. I realized I didn’t know anything. I faced children that were deaf and knew only sign language in Swahili. I guess you can imagine the situation. I just had my hands, my smile and my eyes to create contact. This is how I learnt that words are often more useless than anything. I spent hours with them without saying a word. Nevertheless, believe it or not, we talked, we played, we learned and laughed. We did all of it without words. This one-month-long stay didn’t only force me to test my limits but also made me realize which of my skills were useful. I discovered on one hand a new world completely different from mine and on the other hand myself. Such an experience is not only about helping others but it is also about growing. It made me understand better what I want my professional goals to be and what kind of person I am aiming to become. Moreover, I was able to experience real field and office work in a country with people lacking the basics we take for granted. Believe me when I say that I was astonished by how much work the doctors at the clubfoot clinic can accomplish with 100 times less material and facilities than in Switzerland. Only through such an experience, one can understand how to really help, how to really make a difference. Only by seeing with your own eyes, by talking with the neediest and by living near them, it is possible to put in place projects that will trigger change. Only by going there, one can understand how precious a water tank or 5 dollars can be. Zanzibar Outreach Program gave me this opportunity and for this, I will be forever grateful.
