Zanzibar Outreach Program / Club Foot Management Program in Zanzibar

CLUBFOOT: Is a congenital birth defect characterized by rotation of the forefoot, heel varus, equinus of the ankle and major deviation of the foot.

THE PONSETI METHOD: Is a non-operative procedure and cost-effective method of clubfoot treatment by combination of manipulation and casting followed by a minor surgical procedure to release the Achilles tendon.

The treatment starts as soon as possible after the birth of the newborn. A child with clubfoot should receive series of six – seven plaster casts during the treatment. In end of October 2010, The Clubfoot Management Program was established at Mnazi Mmoja Hospital in Zanzibar through funding from Infant Clubfoot Appeal in collaboration with the Zanzibar Outreach Program with the main aim of ensuring every child born with clubfoot in Zanzibar receives quality and timely treatment, providing them with equal opportunities to lead active and productive lives.

More than 1200 new babies born with clubfoot have been treated and prevented from disabilities caused by neglected Clubfoot

The awareness to local communities on Clubfoot and its treatment has dramatically increased due to community outreach programs, parental education , posters & media
