A Brief History of ZOP

Zanzibar Outreach Program / A Brief History of ZOP

Zanzibar Outreach Programme was founded in 2006 by Zanzibaris living in Zanzibar and some living in the UK diaspora, with the objective of reaching members of society on the island who were in need of basic social services.

In 2006 an executive committee was carefully chosen, made up of people who were satisfied enough with their lives to preclude self interest and ensure that the integrity of ZOP principles was duly safeguarded. Initially out of their own pockets and with the crucial support of the then Director of Zanzibar’s main Mnazi Mmoja Hospital Dr Abdallah Mabodi and Director General of the Ministry of Health Dr Malick Abdalla, the first health programs began; Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), under Dr Naufal, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology (Obs/Gyn) outreach medical camps, under Dr Khadija Said, both in Pemba.

By 2007 ZOP had expanded their outreach work to include water projects and charity distribution.
